Symone Yancey is an associate at GS&A with a strong background in civil rights and class action litigation. She joined the firm from Mobilization for Justice's Special Litigation Project where, as the Alan Mansfield Racial Justice Fellow, she represented low-income New Yorkers in a number of impact litigation cases. For example, Symone represented a class of drivers in a lawsuit against the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission for unconstitutionally targeting racial minorities in their undercover street hail operations. Symone also clerked for the Hon. Madeline Cox Arleo of the New Jersey District Court. She began her career as an Associate at Sidley Austin, LLP where she specialized in corporate litigation and won an award for her commitment to her pro bono docket.
Symone graduated from Columbia Law School, where she served as an editor of the Columbia Human Rights Law Review and was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. She was also a board member for the Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual and Columbia Law School's chapter of If/When/How, Lawyering for Reproductive Justice. While at Columbia Law, she worked at Squire Patton Boggs’ Public Service Initiative to litigate appeals and advocate for inmates serving life in prison and death sentences. Additionally, she worked at a boutique law firm litigating employment discrimination matters.
While not at the office, Symone enjoys fiction writing, playing badminton, and spending time with her dog, Maxwell.
REPRESENTATIVE CASES
- Miller, et al. v. City of New York, et al., No. 23-cv-00065 (E.D.N.Y.) --- Defeated a motion to dismiss in a case against the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission for unconstitutionally targeting racial minorities in their undercover street hail operations in violation of the 8th and 14th amendments.
- D.W. et al v. New York City Department of Education, et al, No. 23-cv-03179 (S.D.N.Y.) -- Assisted in a class action lawsuit against the New York City Department of Education for their systemic failure to provide timely special education evaluations to disabled students.
